WCP is proud to share our AI Semiconductor Report by our Managing Director, Shusaku Sumida. The report covers investment and M&A trends in the AI Semiconductor space.
Up until recently, the semiconductor industry was stagnant, facing the physical limitations in the chip designs per Moore’s law. Consolidation became the primary way for a company in the industry to continue to grow. Though the market was stagnant, AI software implementation progressed significantly since 2012 in the application area of image recognition and natural language processing.
Initial demand was given to available GPUs, which have been used for games, to utilize parallel processing capabilities. In the deployment of IoT and ADAS, AI software became a critical factor. Further progress was made in the technology development simulating the human brain mechanism, which IBM initiated more than 10 years ago.
The market started recognizing the necessity of creating cost and power effective AI functionalities, and recalling investment money to AI semiconductor startups, especially to early stage startups. Machine learning and deep learning capabilities for inference and training were successfully demonstrated. A few unicorn AI semiconductor companies were born.
In this report, we discuss new driving forces, different approaches in technology developments, and 53 recognized AI chip startups.
